Newton, Mass- The Newbury College baseball team handed Lasell College a non-conference loss tonight, 13-3, at Brandeis University. Junior center fielder Billy Maddock (Marshfield, Mass.) led for the Nighthawks, going 4 for 5, hitting two doubles, one triple, and a two run homer earning seven RBI's on the evening. The Lasers are now 6-15 on the year, while Newbury College takes their second win of the season, at 2-17 overall.
The Lasers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning. Jim Amon (Warren, NJ) singled to get on base, followed by Patrick Girard (Stonington, Conn.) reaching on an error by Newbury's third baseman, and finally Junior Vieja (Randolph, Mass.) walked to load the bases. Amon was brought home by Mike Grenier (Fitchburg, Mass.), who earned the RBI as he grounded out to second.
The Nighthawks answered in the top of the third as Maddock shot a triple over Lasell's centerfielder to send home Wayne Borden (Methuen, Mass.) and Evan Hudson (Sunapee, NH) taking the lead from the Lasers. Maddock rounded home on a passed ball to score the third Nighthawk run.
Freshman second baseman Matt Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.) had a two base hit and stole third to get into scoring position for Lasell in the third stanza. Mike Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.) brought Matt Mahoney home as he put a base hit through the right side to end the frame with Lasell down just one run, at 3-2.
However, Newbury took off and scored four more runs between the fourth and fifth innings to take a decided advantage. Joseph Herer (Needham, Mass.) doubled to earn two runs batted in during the fourth inning. In the fifth, Maddock's double to center field earned him another RBI, and then scored himself on another passed ball in a replay of his previous journey home.
Lasell's final run was scored in the bottom of the fifth stanza when Josh Sullivan (Rockland, Mass.) came around after Mike Mahoney singled through the middle.
Unfortunately for the Lasers, Maddock's two run homer in the sixth put Lasell in a 9-3 deficit and his second two-base hit in the 8th knocked in two more runners for the Nighthawks, to close the scoring 13-3.
Lasell's Mike Mahoney ended the night with two hits and two RBI's, while Matt Mahoney had two hits and earned a run. Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, Mass.) made some great plays defensively for the Lasers at short stop, including a diving catch turned double play to end the fourth inning.
In addition to Maddock, the Nighthawks got two hits apiece from Herer and Curran Shane (Bedford, NH).
Both teams are back in action on Thursday, April 9th. The Nighthawks play at MIT against Wentworth Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m., and the Lasers are back on their home field at Brandies University where they will take on UMass Boston beginning at 7:00 p.m.
