Old Westbury Powers Past Baseball in Florida Debut
The Lasell College baseball team pounded out 16 hits and scored in five innings, but suffered a 24-16 loss to the Panthers of SUNY College at Old Westbury in its first of seven games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Tuesday afternoon at Terry Park.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/14/17) -- The Lasell College baseball team pounded out 16 hits and scored in five innings, but suffered a 24-16 loss to the Panthers of SUNY College at Old Westbury in its first of seven games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Tuesday afternoon at Terry Park.
Both teams now have .500 records on the season as the Lasers slip to 2-2 and the Panthers advance to 3-3.
Junior first baseman Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) was one of five Lasers with multiple hits in the game, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI, including a two-run home run as part of a five-run second inning. Sophomore center fielder Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) went 4-for-5, while second baseman David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) also recorded three hits.
Senior shortstop Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) and Mascolo drove in runs with first-inning singles to give the Lasers a 2-0 lead that extended to 7-2 after two innings, but the Panthers scored six runs over the next two frames to take a one-run lead.
Old Westbury took an 11-7 lead with a three-run top of the sixth, but the Lasers tied the game at 11-11 with four runs on four hits in the bottom half, highlighted by Mascolo's two-run double to center field. Right fielder Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) and Coscione posted hits in the frame.
The Panthers scored 13 runs over the final three innings to take the lead for good, although Lasell finished the game with a run in the seventh and four in the eighth. Of note, freshman catcher Joe Sullivan (Sandwich, Mass.) hit an eighth-inning single to right field to record his first collegiate RBI.
Sophomore Daniel Petr (East Haven, Conn.) struck out five over his first three innings of work for the Lasers, while classmate Justin Webb (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in the seventh.
Senior Trey Pizzutello (Stamford, Conn.) earned the win for Old Westbury as he fanned four batters in three innings of work after starter Daniel Aguilo's (Elmont, N.Y.) went the first four.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday, March 15 at the Lee County Player Development Complex. The Lasers face the Blue Devils of Wisconsin-Stout at noon on Field 5, while the Panthers play a 9:00 a.m. doubleheader with Scranton on Field 3.
