Four Lasell Student-Athletes receive GNAC Weekly Honors

NEWTON, Mass. – Four Lasell College student-athletes received Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Weekly honors, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Juniors Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) and Vanessa Pino (Methuen, Mass.) were named GNAC Men's and Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week, sophomore Zach Handzel (Palmer, Mass.) was selected GNAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week, and junior Ben Lane (Rutland, Vt.) was named Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

A junior midfielder, Madden tallied 10 goals and one assist for 11 points in a 2-0 week for the Lasers. He notched two goals and one assist in a win over Albertus Magnus College, and he tied a school record with eight goals in a win over Rivier University. He also scored his 100th career goal in the win over Rivier.

A junior attacker, Pino recorded 12 points on nine goals and three assists in a 2-0 week. She scored a career-high eight goals and matched her career-best with 10 points in a win at Norwich, and added a goal and an assist in limited action in a win at the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.).

A sophomore righthander, Handzel pitched a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 victory to hand Saint Joseph's of Maine its first conference loss of the season. Handzel scattered five hits and two walks to post his first victory of the season. The Monks loaded the bases in the second inning, put a runner in scoring position in the fifth, and got a one-out double in the sixth, but Handzel escaped each jam unscathed. The Laser right-hander whiffed two in the final inning, including the final batter to seal the win.

A junior sprinter, Lane posted the top performances for the Lasers in the sprints at the MIT Sean Collier Invitational. He ran a season-best time of 11.59 seconds in the 100 meters to place ninth out of 39 sprinters, and he ran a career-best 23.11 in the 200 meters to place eighth out of 39 runners.
