FH: Lasers Drop to Wildcats 3-0
Newton, MA- Lasell University dropped a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-0 to visiting Johnson & Wales. The Lasers battled throughout the match, holding the Wildcats scoreless through the first half and delivering strong defensive moments, including a highlight-reel penalty stroke save by senior goalkeeper McKenna Ecker.
Lasell started strong, generating a penalty corner less than a minute into the game and putting early pressure on the Johnson & Wales defense. Halleen Seguin led the Lasers with four shots, including a dangerous chance in the first minute that was turned away by JWU keeper Sophia Brea. Defensively, Brooke Gaudet anchored the backline in goal, making nine saves over 60 minutes, several of which came on shots from close range. The first half ended in a scoreless deadlock thanks in large part to her effort and the team's organized defense.
The game's most electric moment came in the 48th minute, shortly after Johnson & Wales had taken a 1-0 lead. When the Wildcats were awarded a penalty stroke, Ecker entered the game and immediately made a huge impact, stopping the attempt from JWU's Hannah Geil to keep Lasell within striking distance. Ecker's save energized the sideline and marked a key momentum moment for the Lasers.
Offensively, Lasell found rhythm in the second half, especially in the third quarter, when they earned five penalty corners and fired multiple shots inside the circle. Jacquelyn Scopa, Amelia McAfee, and Megan Crabtree each contributed to the attack, while Seguin nearly scored late in the third, only to be denied by a defensive save from JWU's Zoe Soletsky. Despite generating eight penalty corners and 10 shots overall, Lasell couldn't find the back of the cage.
Johnson & Wales eventually pulled away late in the fourth quarter, adding goals from Ava Pontes in the 56th minute and Caitlin Quinn in the 58th to seal the 3-0 result.
Up Next: The Lasers will be back at home this Saturday for another non-conference matchup, this time against Thomas College.
