MVB: Lasers Battle to the Wire Against Wentworth and Win in 5
Newton MA- The Lasell University men's volleyball team delivered a commanding 3-2 win against Wentworth on Thursday evening.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle that ultimately ended in a narrow 25–23 win for the Lasers. Teddy Teraszkiewicz and Jasper Schultz led the offensive charge early, connecting on multiple kills off strong sets from Trystan Maloney and Branch Barnes to keep the score tight. Schultz sparked a key mid-set run, helping even the score at 16–16 after overcoming an early deficit. Lasell capitalized late, using a clutch kill and a final block to seal the two-point decision.
Set two was another back-and-forth battle that needed extra points to decide a winner. Early on, kills from Schultz and Barnes helped set the tone, with Teraszkiewicz and Cole Esterline adding key finishes to keep the offense balanced. Despite several service errors that stalled momentum at times, the attack found its rhythm midway through the set as Schultz connected repeatedly off assists from Barnes and Maloney to erase deficits and level the score at 26-26. Remy Cahalan also delivered in crucial moments, combining with strong net play and timely blocks to keep the pressure on. Even with the late push and tying point at 27-27, the set ultimately slipped away and the Leopards won 29-27, tying the match 1-1.
The third set saw a strong offensive showing, with Schultz once again leading the charge and closing it out in commanding fashion. After trading early points, Schultz caught fire midway through the frame, racking up multiple kills off crisp assists from Barnes and Maloney to stretch the lead. Cahalan added key swings, while Teraszkiewicz chipped in with timely finishes to maintain momentum. A service ace from Barnes and another from Peyton Walter provided a spark from the line, helping create separation as the score climbed. Despite a few service errors that briefly slowed the pace, the attack remained efficient and balanced, pulling away late to secure a 25-18 set victory, giving the Lasers a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Set four was a thriller that went down to the wire, featuring multiple ties and momentum swings before a 31-29 finish for the Leopards to tie the match 2-2. Early on, Barnes and Maloney connected repeatedly to fuel the offense, setting up kills from Cahalan, Teraszkiewicz, and Schultz to keep things even. Service errors on both sides kept the score tight, but key stretches from Barnes, who distributed effectively helped erase small deficits. Late in the set, Buckwalter delivered clutch kills, while strong net defense from Barnes, Buckwalter, and Teraszkiewicz produced crucial blocks to swing momentum. Ryan Mesnik contributed key digs to keep the offense moving and Schultz added timely swings to knot the score at 25-25 and again at 28-28, but after another dramatic exchange and a final attack error, the set slipped away in extra points, capping off an intense battle going into a fifth and deciding set.
Lasell pulled away in the fifth set with a dominant 15-5 win. After a brief back-and-forth start, Lasell went on an 11-1 run behind big kills from Schultz and Teraszkiewicz, plus a service ace to close it out, sealing the match in commanding fashion.
