Standish, ME – Lasell University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 road victory over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the SJC Athletic Complex. With the win, the Lasers improve to 4-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in GNAC play, while the Monks fall to 2-5-0 (2-3-0 GNAC).
The match was tightly contested through the first half, as both teams battled through warm, mid-afternoon conditions. The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when freshman Ayla Hathaway pounced on a rebound in the crease and slotted it home for her third goal of the season. The freshman's finish not only broke the scoreless deadlock but also stood as the eventual game-winner.
Saint Joseph's looked to respond with pressure late in the second half, including a close chance in the 72nd minute when Sydney Gallop sent a shot just over the bar. However, the Lasers' defense remained composed and limited the Monks' quality chances down the stretch.
Lasell held a firm advantage in team statistics, outshooting the Monks 15-6 overall, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. The Lasers also earned seven corner kicks to the Monks' three. In goal, Lasell senior Elizabeth DaSilva made three saves to record her second shutout of the season.
Up Next: The Lasers will be back at home this Tuesday, as they take on GNAC opponent Colby-Sawyer.
