Melrose, MA- Lasell posted a conference split against New England College on Sunday at Kezer Field, falling in the opener before responding with a strong bounce-back performance in game two.
Game 1
The Lasers struck first in the opening frame when Connor Freitas ripped an RBI double to left center to bring home Tim Callahan. After New England College answered with a four-run second inning, Lasell chipped away and worked its way back into the game.
Bobby Long delivered an RBI single in the second before Callahan added a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. The Lasers continued to apply pressure in the third and fourth innings, tying the game on a Nick Nigro sacrifice fly before taking a 5–4 lead on another sac fly from Jeremy Angeles.
Lasell pitching held New England College quiet into the later innings, but the visitors evened the score in the seventh on a wild pitch before breaking things open in the eighth. A solo home run gave New England College the lead, followed by a three-run shot and another solo homer to extend the advantage to 10–5.
Freitas led the Lasers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Braelen Silva also recorded a pair of hits. Angeles added an RBI and reached base three times, and Callahan drove in a run and scored once.
On the mound, Luke Descheneaux got the start, allowing four runs over four innings while striking out four. Lucas Stogner provided solid relief with just one run allowed across 2.1 innings before New England College's late rally.
Game 2
After a quiet start through the first two innings, the Lasers broke the game open with a five-run third inning and never looked back. Declan Silva got the scoring started with a two-RBI single before Tim Callahan added an RBI groundout. A wild pitch plated another run, and Jeremy Angeles capped the inning with an RBI double to make it 5–0.
Lasell continued to pour it on in the middle innings, adding one in the fourth before a three-run fifth extended the lead to 9–0. Nick Nigro drove in a run with a double, while Calvin Sanft followed with a two-RBI double to push the advantage further.
The Lasers added the finishing touches in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Connor Freitas and an RBI single from Sanft to round out the scoring.
Sanft led the offensive effort with a 3-for-4 day, driving in three runs and doubling twice, while Freitas finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Declan Silva added two hits and two RBIs, and Nigro and Jonah Nielsen each collected two hits as part of Lasell's 15-hit attack.
On the mound, Benjamin Conlon was dominant, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and striking out seven to earn the win. Jeremy Wacker closed the door with 1.1 hitless innings, striking out two to complete the shutout.
Up Next: The Lasers will be on the road this coming Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against UMass Boston.
